Say it with me, “The Big-Box-Gym era is over.”
Yes, it feels so good.
It is with all due respect.
The era was legendary.
Gold’s, 24Hour, LAFitness, Bodybuilding, Nautilus Machines, Barbells, Dumbbells, Stringers, 20,000-50,000sqft. boxes, Blue, Red, Yellow, Arnold, Dorian, 80’s, 90’s, 00’s, tanning beds!
I started lifting with my father, who was a product of it all. Bench press. Compound Lifts. Supersets. Heavy lifting.
Much respect. But, just like my father’s joints, this era is breaking down nastily.
Why?
Here’s the thing…

These gyms were built for maximum scalability not maximum training quality. They were never about quality training. These are real estate business’ wrapped in “fitness branding” through a subscription model.
These boxes, I mean gyms, feel like malls. Low intimidation. Broad Appeal. Loud-ish crappy music. Most of the members don’t show up, which is what the business model relies on. Cheap memberships. GIANT parking lots. Rows of cardio equipment. Tv’s everywhere. Florescent lighting. Less than 5% of the population achieving any sort of real result.
The big-box-gym actually feels like a fast-food-chain at a food court.
It’s been 40 years and it’s finally getting squeezed out.
I do want to say, some big-boxers did great. I need not name any here. They ran good business mixed with quality training and environment and changed millions of lives for the better. Mine being one.
Where is the industry going?
Of course, to where people will achieve actual results. Duh!
Intentional. Impactful. Simple. Classy. Clean. Nature.
Less mass corporate and more impact in smaller forms. Less suburban. More art. More creative. Less sterile. More efficient. More results. More meaning. More fun. Less centralized. More decentralized. If you know what I mean.
Yes, yes, yes.
This is also, why Uki was birthed 9 months ago.
If you didn’t know, well, now, you know.
